An unusual commercial truck accident occurred recently that left nearly 30,000 pounds of ice cream in jeopardy of melting on an Ohio highway. Recently, a 53-foot-long tractor-trailer truck hauling a shipment of Edy's ice cream crashed when the truck accidently traveled down an embankment on Interstate 77. As a result, the southbound lanes of the highway were shut down for more than eight hours.

The truck accident occurred around 1:47 p.m. when the truck traveling southbound on I-77 drove off the left side of the road and slide down a 10-foot embankment. The truck came to a stop about 45 feet away from the highway and had flattened a number of its tires.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the driver of the truck was 49-year-old Jerry Bennett who was hauling 30,000 pounds of Edy's ice cream from a manufacturing facility in New York State. He was headed to Edy's distribution warehouses in Pittsburgh and Maryland when the crash occurred.

No other vehicles were involved. However, Police expressed that the truck tore big chucks out of the road when it ran off the road, which could have posed a threat to any cars or trucks traveling behind the rig. Police are still investigation the cause of the crash.

Hours after the truck accident, a tow truck arrived to haul away the wrecked vehicle out of the embankment. Police officials commented that this was quite a task due to the total truck weight of 70,000 pounds which was submerged under a lake of mud.

Despite the accident, the truck's freezer continued to work and most of the ice cream was saved.
